About Esteamed Coffee

Esteamed Coffee is a 501(c)(3) non-profit coffee shop and café located in Cary, NC. Their mission is to lower the unemployment rate and increase the quality of life for adults with intellectual, developmental, communication, and/or visual disabilities by creating meaningful jobs and social opportunities in a warm, supportive environment.

They envision a world where adults with disabilities have access to meaningful work and social opportunities while being respected, represented, and fully integrated into every local community.

Custom built accessibility menu

When we built Esteamed Coffee’s site, we knew it couldn’t rely on a plug and play accessibility overlay. Their mission, lowering unemployment for adults with intellectual, developmental, communication, and visual disabilities, called for a more thoughtful solution.

On the homepage, we added our own custom-built Accessibility Menu. Clicking it opens a panel with simple controls for larger or smaller text, adjustable line spacing, and a dyslexia friendly font, making on screen text easier to read. We also created a reading mask feature to help visitors focus line by line, along with low/high saturation and color blind modes to cater to visitors with light sensitivity or color vision deficiencies. A reset button allows users to quickly revert any adjustments.

By developing this tool from scratch, we ensured Esteamed Coffee’s website embodied the same inclusivity as their café, while saving them from ongoing monthly fees associated with third party accessibility widgets. It aligns perfectly with their vision of building a community where adults with disabilities are respected, included, and represented.

Upgraded experience

The new Esteamed Coffee site delivers a significant improvement over the older version in both appearance and usability. The previous site was relatively static with limited interactivity and an older look; it did not fully reflect the energy of the Esteamed mission or encourage visitors to take action. The new Webflow‑based design introduces clean typography, wave‑shaped sections and high‑quality photos and videos of the café and its staff, creating an inviting and professional atmosphere. Navigation is organized into clear categories, with prominent calls to action guiding visitors to engage more easily.

User journeys have also been enhanced: visitors can browse the café menu, purchase beans and merchandise through an integrated online shop, buy digital gift cards, book events, explore upcoming events, and even apply for jobs or sign up as volunteers, all within the same site. The result is a polished, welcoming experience that reflects Esteamed Coffee’s mission of inclusion and makes it easier for supporters to connect, donate and participate.
